John Körmeling – De IJzeren Rijn
Curator - Thérèse Legierse
Victoria bridge, Neerpelt, Belgium, 31 March 2017
The context
This bridge played an important role during the last war, hence its name, Victoria. It is currently part of the "Rhine of Steel" (IJzeren Rijn) railway line between Antwerp and the Ruhr. This line would finally put an end to the constant flow of trucks that motorists face on the highway.
The railway line is being discussed by Neerpelt residents and local residents who fear nuisance.
As commissioners, they commissioned John Körmeling to give shape to their concerns and for the work of art to contribute to the debate.
